Chief of staff selected for Columbia superintendent's job
Feb. 21, 2003

Chief of Staff Phyllis Chase has accepted the position of superintendent of Columbia School District effective July 1, 2003. She replaces the current superintendent who is retiring after 33 years in the district.

"This was a very difficult decision for me because I am so pleased with the things that are happening in Springfield Public Schools," Chase said. "We've accomplished so much in the past few years. I feel like I'm leaving Springfield Public Schools under capable leadership."

Looking to the future, though, Chase said she believes this new opportunity is a perfect fit for her. "There are many exciting things happening in the Columbia school district as well," she said. "The prospect of leading the district into the future will be a new and exciting opportunity for me."

Chase has served as chief of staff since joining Springfield Public Schools July 1, 2000. During her tenure, Chase spearheaded the development of the district's accountability plan. She was also instrumental in a citizens' review of the district's boundaries and facilities. Her other responsibilities include administering district programs and developing and reviewing district policies.

"Dr. Chase is an outstanding facilitator who has used her skills to further our district during her tenure," said Superintendent Jack Ernst. " Her absence will be felt in our school district, but we know she will do an outstanding job as the new superintendent in Columbia. We wish her all the best."

Before joining Springfield Public Schools, Chase was acting superintendent for the Kansas City, Missouri, school district from 1998-2000. She has an educational doctorate from the University of Kansas in policy and administration with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction. She also possesses a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Creighton University.
