Colbaugh named Missouri's National Distinguished Principal
March 17, 2003

Dr. Nancy Colbaugh, principal of Field Elementary School, has been named Missouri’s National Distinguished Principal for 2003. The prestigious award is given annually by the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals as part of a nationwide program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

The announcement concludes a lengthy nomination and screening process involving elementary principals from around the state. As recipient of the award, Colbaugh will travel to Washington, D.C., in September to represent the state during two days of activities involving some 60 elementary principals from around the nation.

Field Elementary students and teachers honored their principal during an assembly at 9 a.m. Monday, March 17. Colbaugh will also be recognized during the school board meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.

Colbaugh has been an administrator in the district eight years. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Evangel University, master’s and specialist’s degrees from Southwest Missouri State University, and was part of the first statewide cohort in the Educational Leadership Department at the University of Missouri. She completed her doctorate in education leadership in December 2001.

As principal of Field Elementary School, Colbaugh guided the writing and implementation of the School Improvement Plan, as well as the revision and development of the school mission, vision, collective commitment and goals.

Colbaugh serves as president of the Springfield Association of Elementary School Principals. She also represents the principals on several leadership committees within the district. She is a member of the National Association of Elementary School Principals, Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
