Schools earn distinction on state's Top Ten Schools list
March 4, 2003

Springfield Public Schools was named 21 times on the Top Ten Schools list released today by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The list ranks the performance of elementary schools, middle schools and high schools throughout with the highest percentages of students scoring at the "Proficient" and "Advanced" levels in each subject area and grade level covered by the mandatory Missouri Assessment Program tests.

Ten schools in the Springfield district were named 21 times for performance in the areas of math, science, social studies and communication arts. Only one other district in the state was listed more times.

Springfield Public Schools improved its performance over last year with two additional rankings on the list. Last year the district was mentioned 19 times compared with 21 times this year.

Here is a summary of the schools named to the Top Ten list and their areas of achievement:

Elementary Schools:
Disney Elementary: 1 area (math)
Field Elementary: 3 areas (math, science, social studies)
Gray Elementary: 3 areas (communication arts, math, science)
McBride Elementary: 1 area (science)
Pittman Elementary: 1 area (communication arts)
Pleasant View Elementary: 1 area (communication arts)
Wilder Elementary: 3 areas (communication arts, math, science)
Middle Schools:
Central Middlers: 2 areas (communication arts, social studies)
Cherokee Middle: 3 areas (communication arts, science, social studies)
Pershing Middle: 3 areas (communication arts, science, social studies)
High Schools:
None
Total: 21 occurrences
