Foundation gives reading teaching awards
April 13, 2006

This week The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools surprised five district teachers by honoring them in their classrooms with the Turner Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching Reading.

The award was established five years ago by the Turner family of Springfield to reward teachers who show excellence in teaching reading. Each year, five teachers are awarded cash gifts of $2,000 each. Half of the award money must be used for the teacher’s classroom or school needs and the other half may be spent at the teacher’s discretion.

The 2006 award recipients are:

Janet Gore, literacy coach, Portland Elementary School
Sheri Bryan, kindergarten teacher, Westport Elementary School
Nancy Raider, fifth-grade teacher, Disney Elementary School
Barbara James, communication arts teacher, Kickapoo High School
Lori Benham, reading specialist, Robberson Elementary School
