Church volunteers to spruce up York elementary July 26

Several hundred volunteers from North Point Church in north Springfield will provide an extreme makeover to York Elementary School on Saturday, July 26, at the 2100 W. Nichols St. school.
The cleanup event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will include sealing and striping the parking lot, sealing and painting playground asphalt, repairing building soffit and fascia, painting classrooms and trimming and weeding.
Leslie Ballew, district quality assurance manager, said the volunteer work will save the district significant maintenance dollars. “We are very grateful to the North Point volunteers."
Bowerman recognized for volunteer efforts

Bowerman Elementary School is making a difference in the Woodland Heights neighborhood of northwest Springfield. On Saturday, July 12, Bowerman will be among a handful of “institutional nominees” recognized during the 4th annual Urban Neighborhoods Alliance volunteer recognition picnic in Jordan Valley Park.
This yearly event recognizes volunteers and institutions that make a difference in UNA neighborhoods of center-city Springfield.
Bowerman principal Jason Steingraber said the school was nominated by the Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association and he’s humbled by their recognition.
“The Woodland Heights community is so supportive of our school,” said Steingraber. “There’s an anticipation of a lot of good things going on at Bowerman and the community recognizes it.”
The picnic is from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The awards ceremony is at 12:15 p.m.
Record number graduating from summer school

The largest class of summer school graduates will receive their diplomas during summer school commencement ceremonies Thursday, July 3, at Central High School. Graduates represent all five Springfield public high schools and Bailey Alternative School
About 43 students will participate in the ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Central auditorium, 423 E. Central St. Last year 31 students participated in summer school commencement ceremonies.
The district has set a goal under its strategic plan, SP5, to increase its overall graduation rate to 85 percent by 2012.In 2007, 80.2 percent of eligible students graduated, an increase from the previous year of 1.3 percent.
Summer school students have worked toward their diploma by studying for their GED, taking credit recovery classes or taking summer school courses.
